Season 1

The Colgate Variety Hour
Season 6 - 1955

Martin and Lewis, the last of the original hosts, made two appearances in this final half-season of the show. Jack Carson and Robert Paige did the honors in the majority of the remaining ones.

Special events included highlights from Oklahoma! with former "singing host" Gordon MacRae, a Hollywood awards ceremony, and a salute to producer-director-actor George Abbott. The monthly pre-emptions continued.

Note: Dean sings "It Must Be True" and "Memories Are Made Of This," and he and Jerry team up for "Two Lost Souls" (from Damn Yankees) and a tongue-in-cheek "Sometimes I'm Happy" with The Norman Luboff Choir. In a comedy skit, Jerry plays a Japanese movie actor (complete with offensive fifties-era stereotype) and later engages in a hilarious exchange with his director about hitting his mark. Variety called this "a crowded hour of M&L-only and virtually all of it off the top shelf in their laugh department, all solid material with no stretching or stalling." It was the team's final Comedy Hour performance and a fitting end to one of the most successful runs on television. (Following a much-publicized spat, Dean and Jerry would split up the following year and pursue separate careers.)
